The School District of the Chathams announced their offices will open again on Tuesday. Athletic team practices and other school activities will also resume.

#13;

The Chatham Township Municipal Building, where the school district offices are located, was without power since Sunday and unable to open on Monday.

#13;

Mayor Nicole Hagner said power is back on at the municipal building, which will open for business Tuesday morning as usual.

#13;

As of 8:13 pm Monday, JCPamp;Ls website said 3,945 customers in Chatham and 75 in Green Village were still without power. While some neighborhoods reported the power was restored throughout the day Monday, JCPamp;L said some customers may remain without power for two to four more days.

#13;

Trees continued to collapse Monday in the Chathams, and tree companies and the borough and township Departments of Public Works went about clearing streets wherever possible. Many trees, though, have utility wires down as well.

#13;

The Snake Hill neighborhood along Southern Boulevard from Fairmount Avenue to River Road is completely closed, according to Mayor Nicole Hagner. Fairmount Avenue is also closed heading north from the township into the borough.

#13;

There are other side streets with trees down as well, but its pretty easy to get around them, Hagner said.

#13;

Both municipalities will open their respective mulch areas for residents to bring fallen branches and leaves from their yards.

#13;

The Chatham Borough Mulch Area is located on Duchamp Avenue and will be open from 8 am to 3:30 pm all week. The Chatham Township Much Area on Tanglewood Lane will be open from 8 am through 2 pm

#13;

Chatham Township Police sent an alert Monday afternoon that Colony Pool is closed until further notice. Hagner said there was at least one large tree down at the pool.

HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Pennsylvania departments of Health and Conservation and Natural Resources have announced that the lake at Cowans Gap State Park, Fulton County, has been closed for recreational use until further notice. The park remains open for camping and other activities.

The decision to close the lake, effective 5:30 pm on Aug. 9, came after six confirmed and three probable illnesses of Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7) recently were identified in persons who reported swimming in the lake between July 12 and July 31. Swimming in the lake prior to becoming ill was the only factor in common among all the ill individuals.

All activities where visitors come in contact with the 42-acre lake have been temporarily suspended, including swimming, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and other boating.

Ensuring the health and safety of state park visitors is our main concern, said Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Richard J. Allan. While it is very unfortunate that we must close a major recreational aspect of this beautiful park, we must take all precautions to ensure the lake water is safe.

The secretary noted regular testing of the lake waters throughout the summer indicated no danger to swimmers. Since 2006, only one sampling resulted in a one-day closing of the lakes two beaches.

The lake is being closed as a precautionary measure to protect the publics health and safety until a thorough investigation can be completed.

We take these cases very seriously, said Department of Health Secretary Dr. Eli Avila. Investigating how the outbreak occurred is a top priority for us.

Each of the reported victims said they used the lake sometime between July 12 and July 31. The ill persons range in age from two to 49 years, and all but one are from the south-central region of Pennsylvania. One Maryland resident also was sickened.

There is no current evidence that potable water in the park has played any role in the E. coli O157:H7 problem.

E. coli O157:H7 most often causes diarrheal illness that can often be bloody and accompanied by cramps, and onset is typically one to seven days after exposure.

Illness is most common in children, but all ages can be affected. Hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS, is a complication of E. coli O157:H7 infections which can result in anemia and kidney damage. HUS is found in five to 15 percent of people with E. coli O157:H7 infection. While most E. coli O157:H7 infections are linked to contaminated food, waterborne outbreaks also have occurred in the past.

The Department of Health recommends that anyone who has visited the park and experiences diarrhea should contact their health care provider, their local health department or the Pennsylvania Department of Health at 1-877-PA-HEALTH (877-724-3258).

Surrounded by Buchanan State Forest, Cowans Gap State Park draws more than 440,000 visitors annually. The lake, large campground, rustic cabins and many hiking trails are prime attractions.

Dogs and cats are popular pets, not only because of how social they are, but how smart they are, too. You may wonder then why pets often behave in ways that do not make any sense.

WYSOX, Pa. – The Marcellus Shale natural gas industry has a huge thirst for water – to hydraulically fracture a single gas well requires upward of a thousand tanker-trucks of water.

And so during the summer, when some streams here in gas-rich northern Pennsylvania naturally turn into trickles, the Susquehanna River Basin Commission pays close attention to ensure that drilling interests dont suck the states creeks dry.

The SRBC, an interstate agency responsible for managing the Susquehanna watershed, this summer has suspended withdrawals from as many as 40 permitted locations because of seasonal low flows. Most of the suspended locations affect gas drillers.

You wouldnt think that a festival that features high-end art would be a good place for children. After all, children smear, touch and even break things. But coordinators of the Windsor Fine Arts Festival dont want to shoo children away. They want them there.

Organizers kept the popular Clearview Librarys drawing, face painting and chalk art contest on the sidewalks, but they also added a Creative Kids Art Show that will feature the winners of an art contest between the elementary schools of Windsor.

The activities will all take place in a childrens tent with enough space away from the fine art. The show will feature 100 images on display in the tent.

While the parents look around, we wanted to have some things for children to do, said Don Reichert, president of the board of directors for the festival. We felt it was important to have an educational part for this. We want children to understand what art can be.

The kids art show also gives children a place to display their work, Reichert said.

The only place they are able to display their art is in school, he said. Lets give them another avenue.

The festivals main focus, however, is the fine art. Organizers werent sure they would have a festival this year, but after the inaugural success of last year, they knew they had something to build on, both in the number of artists and patrons who attended. Many artists return this year, a good sign for a new event, Reichert said, and the event drew 5,000 last year, thousands more than what organizers were expecting.

It was a shot in the dark, he said. We didnt know if fine art was something we could generate interest for in northern Colorado. But theres a need and now we think theres an interest.

There are many arts and craft shows in the area but there, again, just isnt a fine arts show in northern Colorado, and I think people were attracted to the fact that this is something different. Its high-end art.

There are approximately 60 artists specializing in mediums such as painting, glassblowing and sculpture. They were chosen by a jury before being accepted for the show, and the quality of work is just second to none, Reichert said.

If anyone wants an opportunity to purchase some fine art for home, office or a gift, this is the perfect opportunity, Reichert said.
