When You Go

• WHERE IS IT?: The Calvert Marine Museum is at 14200 Solomons Island Road (Route 2) in Solomons, about one hour and 15 minutes south of Annapolis.
• WHY IS IT SPECIAL?: The museum has extensive displays and information about prehistoric life in the Chesapeake region, with a special emphasis on the Miocene Epoch. The museum also has the restored Drum Point Lighthouse, historic wooden boats, exhibits of native animals and information about maritime history in the region.
• WHAT CAN I DO?: Learn about local fossils and shark teeth, watch river otters at play, tour the lighthouse, take a trip on a historic buy boat, learn how to build boats or model boats. There are boat-building and fossil clubs at the museum, and periodic field trips to Calvert Cliffs. Special events include concerts and the annual Patuxent River Appreciation Days.
• HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?: Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and the military, $2 for kids ages 5 to 12 and free for little kids. Admission is free on the first Friday of each month from 5 to 8 pm
• WHEN CAN I GO?: The museum is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm, except for New Year#39;s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Times for boat trips and special programs are posted online.
• WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW?: On your way to or from the museum, you can stop along the shoreline to search for shark teeth and other fossils. Calvert Cliffs State Park in Lusby (HG Trueman Road at Route 2) has a section of cliffs and beach, although it has a two-mile hike to the beach.
  Bayfront Park in Chesapeake Beach (off Route 261/Bayside Road at Brownies Beach Road) has a short, paved path to the beach and has no admission charge. Its best to go fossil hunting at low tide. Solomons Island also offers fishing on head boats and charter boats, boat rentals, several waterfront dining options and local shops.
