RALEIGH, NCNorth Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue wants the Obama administration to challenge a federal appeals court ruling in California that she fears could one day place additional regulations upon the states forestry industry.
Perdue wrote Friday to Obama chief of staff Bill Daley urging the administration to seek a US Supreme Court review of a 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals decision requiring logging roads to get special environment permits.
The appeals court agreed with environmental advocates that the forest roads create pollution in the form of muddy water during rainstorms. The ruling doesnt apply to North Carolina right now. Perdue told Daley it could harm the states forest and forest products industrywhich generates more than 180,000 direct and indirect jobsif the requirement is ultimately applied nationally.
